| Abstract: | This is an introduction to the special issue. In the Countryside Survey Programme the development of thought and practice in floral and faunal inventories and integrated ecosystem is assessed. In the special issue the authors report some of the major findings of the latest phase of field surveys, known as Countryside Survey 2000, concentrating on the changes observed in the states of ecosystems. |
