Abstract:This paper presents the rationale for including organizational structure (hereafter as: org-str./org-strs. )in the analysis of small firm performance (here as: perf). It also retrieves several dimensions that may be postulated to describe org-strs. of small firms. Based on the study of a sample of 1.411 Dutch small firms, it is shown that nine structure stereotypes can be delineated. Furthermore, the relevance of the empirical taxonomy is investigated by looking at the relationship with firm perf. as to the sales growth, profitability and innovativeness. It is concluded that org-str. indeed matters and that it is to be taken into account in models and future analysis of small firm performance.
