Abstract:Using Bourdieu's theory of practice and Kelly's personal construct methodology, the study is designed to explore the perceptions held by bank loan officers (here as: ln-offs.) of male and female business owners (as: bs-owns). Among others, the results demonstrate heterogeneity in the constructs held by bank ln-offs., and a particular concern with the character of the bs-owns. Significant gender differences were observed in only 20 of 325 constructs elicited from 35 bank ln-offs. Female bank ln-offs. were as likely as male bank ln-offs. to draw gender distinctions btw. bs-owns. Detailed multivariate analyses confirm no evidence of systematic gender differences in the constructs held by bank ln-offs. of bs-owns.
