Abstract: | In this study the authors research the pattern adoption of high-performance work practices which previously have been explained in terms of union presence and strategic contingency. The authors focus on comparing the post-deregulation/privatization modifications in three case companies, AT&T, British Telecom and Bell Atlantic. Findings from these cases indicate that the decision of new work practices should be recognized not only as a consequence of the firm´s resources or altercations in its environment, nor of a simple union presence, but also as a outcome of the practices´ effects on the nature of the union's engagement, effects on union power and the union's strategic choices. |
