| Abstract: | In this study the authors research the acquisitions done by the Western European banks on Central and Eastern European banks. from mid-1990s onward. The authors test relative strenghts of efficiency versus the market power hypotheses by researching the bank-specific characteristics of the banks involved in the cross-border acquisitions. In addition the performance determinants of the post-acquisition target banks are researched. The findings support the market power hypothesis, raising concerns about the best balance between foreign ownership and competition. |
