Abstract:This study examines the role of an article's contribution (henceforth as: cntrn.) on its citations, based on data collected from European Accounting Review. The journal is an outlet playing an instrumental role in the dissemination of Europe-based accounting research and holding a tradition of tolerance towards using of diverse research methods and paradigms. In this study, proxies are used to evaluate the objective cntrn. of an article and reputation of an author. The findings suggest that articles are cited for their cntrn. rather than as a result of the characteristics of their authors. There are also some suggestions set for capturing the multifaceted nature of research performance.
