Abstract:Lot-sizing methods,that is deciding how much should be ordered when replenishing of items held inventory,are reviewed and evaluated when demand varies in a systematic fashion over time.Application to two types of inventory system are considered,spares provision systems,and production systems where units are stocked for use in manufacture. An assessment is made of the suitability and relative performance of the lot-sizing techniques in the two systems. The likely costs of using simple methods,such as the Economic Order Quantity,when demand is non-stationary.
