Abstract:The research department at Eastman had been asking some central questions: what is its business, who are its customers, what kind of culture the company has? They have made a considerable effort to develop company's innovative activities towards excellence. They worked out a number of predictions for market segments and technological progress. They were searching for new business areas. They worked in teams consisting of 5-6 members. The R+D department had one or two representatives in every team. Strategies for the 35 business segments and optimized plans for the four main business areas were developed. It was tried to carry out technological breakthrough in a few field, but incremental changes were prevailing.
