Abstract: | Machining cost optimization models have become standard tools in manufacturing. Recent interest in automated process planning has led to the incorporation of optimal cutting calculations as part of the process plan. A proper definition is given of cost to be applied to such models. Its economic interpretation is based on the behavior of management in adjusting costs to levels of facility utilization. Cost as a function of cutting speed is analysed. A brief review of the literature on the specification of cost parameters is griven. The choice of cost parameters traditionally used in these models was found incorrectly specified. Sensitivity to selection of cost parameters is calculated. The relationship between total profit and unit machine cost. |
