Abstract:Although there are some theoretical and practical reasons advanced in recent years for rewarding middle managers for strategic thinking, it has remained elusive as to what constitute the antecedents to rewards for thinking strategically. The data presented from 114 CEOs and 637 middle managers suggest that significant antecedent variables are dominant coalition, financial efficiency, perceived job importance and individual investments. Implications of results from the perspective of personnel management are discussed.
