Abstract:The author presents results of a time series analysis of new companies registered over 1952-84. The major factor emerging from the analysis is the institutional environment within which small firms operate. Changes in the tax structure have significant importance, too..The worsening labor market forced some of the unemployed into entrepreneurship with the attendant growth of company registrations in 80s.Despite the encouraging trend, the author feels that these firms are likely to fail.
