Abstract: | The demand for executives willing and able to serve abroad is increasing. The effective fulfillment of this demand is raising many problems. The results of a study concerning Swedish expatriates. The study was covering 639 managers in 26 countries. They found that 25 per cent returned home before the end of their contracts. A description of the selection procedure is given. The three main groups of people involved in the procedure: 1/ head office officials, 2/ expatriate managers, 3/ host country nationals. The difference in their approach is analyzed. Stages proposed for the development of more flexible and relevant criteria are: the role consciousness of the manager, the views of the host country's organization. |
