Abstract: | Confucianism has been the dominant philosophy behind the Korean culture. Confucian traditions have profound positive and negative impacts on modern Korean management practices. These important factors are: paternalism; loyalty to the organization, family, and friends; respect for the hierarchy of occupational ranking; desire for and respect of education; and respect for elders and seniors. The distinguishing characteristics of Korean management, called K-type management, can be summarized as follows: clan management; top-down decision making; flexible lifetime employment; high mobility of workers; confucian work ethic; close government-business relationship. |
