Abstract:MS-DOS allows only eleven characters to be used in defining each file, and most users arbitrarily select the names of each file they save. This lack of forethought results in a listing of file titles which provides little substance with which the systems automated file search capabilities can work. Thus, the file retrieval process is frustrating and often unfruitful, and the time spent performing file searches is a waste of users' time and effectiveness. Described is a way to solve the slow search problem as well as the seemingly impossible purging problem.
