Abstract:The malaise in the nuclear power industry is the result primarily of public fears regarding the safety of this technology and interest in developing inherently safe reactors, that are transparently incapable of producing a core melt, can be directly attributable to these fears. Despite the creation of several promising innovative reactor designs, insufficient political and financial support for large-scale research and development efforts makes their ultimate commercialization questionable. Still, certain possible events like a serious nuclear accident in the West or the establishment of a joint American-Soviet research effort could drastically alter commercialization prospects.
