Abstract:Could a major shift from "fixed" wage to "flexible" wage payment systems - based on a lower base wage and profit related bonuses - eradicate mass unemployment in industrialized countries? Influential economists have claimed that it could. The theory and assumptions used to reach that conclusion is examined. There are critically identified various labour market and distributional implications of revenue-sharing pay, and reviewed the evidence on the actual impact of such schemes, which are spreading rapidly in many parts of the world.
