Abstract:Strategic problems of Shell Chemicals UK are discussed. The need for manpower reduction is highlighted. A change in the site's culture was required. The key to a productive environment was identified as consistency in values and systems. The previous organizational structure is criticized. It was flattened to improve communications and allow more scope within each job. The system with four new performance accountable centres is described. A new team-building system was introduced. Personal training programmes are discussed. Rationalization programmes are examined. Aspects of the change process are summarized. Success factors are highlighted.
