Abstract:Despite coal's advantages and the considerable growth in world traded steam coal, there is a growing feeling that the coal will not attain the market position expected of it. The development of two markets, the Japanese and Italian power station sectors, which were thought to epitomize the golden opportunity for coal, are examined. Coal's performance in these two countries has fallen far short of expectations, and it is analyzed why coal's performance has been so poor, what have been the contribution of factors specific to these two countries and what the future prospects are. If faster rates of expansion are to be achieved, a necessary condition for Italy would be the overcoming of siting and financial difficulties.
