Abstract:The deterioration of the natural woodfuel resources base of developing countries is increasingly being perceived as a problem of land management rather than a question of managing demand and supply. In fact, the economics of natural resource use provides the broader context appropriate for an integrated analysis of the environmental and energy-related aspects of biomass resource management. What is required are more efficient modes of land management based on the commercialization and privatization of traditional farming and land use systems. In this context the government's role is to improve and reinforce the incentive framework for a more efficient and environmentally benign management of natural resources.
