Abstract: | Divestment is a critical corporate skill which few managers possess. The pros and cons of selling off a business division or company that is losing money, are discussed. It is also suggested how to dispose of the asset at a reasonable price. There are several kinds of divestment options to management. These include management buyouts, spin-offs and exchange of interests or asset swaps. Managers sometimes put their business up for sale and then just stand back, rather than trying to solicit prospective buyers. As a result they can only secure deflated offers. Skills in divestment will become a key source of competitive advantage. |
