Abstract:Dissatisfaction with off-the-shelf expert system offerings has led to joining artificial intelligence vendors in the development of software packages. Some vendors try to have the end user take an equity position, but most users prefer a more hands-off relationship, whereby they invest in the technology, not the vendor. However to most end users the technology's great promise is still just that: a promise. Few have had much experience with expert systems. The case of Syntelligence is an exception: it had written an excellent insurance industry software package called Underwriting Advisor. Some reasons to be a partner for vendors are: advantages in competition, better fine-tuning of the system, more opportunities for learning etc.
