Abstract: | The meaning of the term "an organization" is clarified. This attempt is based on the Weberian distinction between corporate groups and organizations and tries to identify the managerial role in the proposed definition. First, Weber's definition is theoretically analyzed and its logical implications are presented. Then, the hypotheses generated from these implications are empirically tested utilizing data collected from 64 USA national manufacturing trade associations. The patterns of findings are congruent with Weber's argument that organizations are a distinct subset of corporate groups. The findings suggest the existence of a staff outside the membership of groups too. |
