Abstract:It is argued that programs of management education in the USA have generally failed to include "front end", pathfinding aspects of management. Instead, they have concentrated on analytic problem solving and, to a much lesser extent, on teaching collaboration and teamwork. Emphasis on these aspects has led, implicitly, to reject individualistic, pro-active path-finders because their cognitive styles are an anathema both to convergent analysis and also to group-oriented team builders. Impressive arguments are set forth, asserting that pathfinding imagination and purposiveness can and should be taught. But it will require to broaden the conception of what constitutes teaching and to generate innovative divergence in the process of teaching.
