Abstract: | A parallel is drawn between debt-equity swaps and debt-commodity swaps as complements in an overall solution to the LDC debt crisis. New market institutions are needed which offer producers of commodities more flexibility in managing their risks. Debt-commodity swaps would provide this flexibility. The attraction of commodity-indexed debt for LDC's is clear: its related position can only be obtained with difficulty, if at all, through the use of futures markets. Commodity-indexed debt could also be attractive to investors as an addition to diversified portfolios of more traditional assets such as equities and bonds. Finally, swaps into commodity-indexed debt might be more palatable to banks. |
