Abstract:Harmonization as a personnel management policy is defined. The implications of new manufacturing processes for harmonizations are discussed under two headings. The first thing to be considered is how the introduction of new technology disturbs social ecology of the organization. Harmonization is seen as a cure for this disturbance. Secondly new technology is shown as an opportunity for personnel managers to pursue harmonization and single status policies. In the research project four "disturbers" were identified: increased flexibility; blurring of collar color; white and blue collar contact; deskilling and reskilling. The four "enablers" were: the manual/non-manual ratio; capital intensity; composition of workforce; reduced plant size.
