Abstract:A research program based on open-ended interviews with corporate, divisional and business management in l6 publicly quoted companies with headquarters in the UK is described. The advantages and disadvantages of various styles of corporate strategic management are examined. Three different styles of management are identified: strategic planning, financial control and strategic control. These styles are analyzed on the basis of the attitudes of management to the fundamental tensions which face the chief executive. The tensions discussed concerned organization structure, planning, central leadership, objective setting, and tightness of control. Managerial implications are summarized.
