Abstract:The preoccupation with returns on investment is today tending to overshadow the growth objective. As a result, corporate strategies are becoming more defensive and relying increasingly on divestment plans. Yet, it is demonstrated that important differences can exist among managers over withdrawal techniques. They are analysed and a descriptive model of divestment is suggested. This leads to question a number of popular notions, and in particular to reject the connotation of failure attached to defensive withdrawal strategies. In conclusion it is argued that, applying more realistic management techniques, divestment may be as useful and profitable as investment.
