Abstract:Restructuring has become a popular option for streamlining organizations. But today, evidence suggests that US corporations have neglected the drawbacks of downsizing. Strategic planning suffers because of slashing headquarters staff. A streamlined head office necessarily offers its operating units a limited menu of technical services, but certain professional skills do not exits at the business-unit level. Downsizing of headquarters staff can also lead to loss of control over business units and to weakening intrafirm communications.
