Abstract:Problems of population have always played an important role in economy. Several theories of "optimal population" were introduced earlier in our century. But it was Becher in 1960 who with his economic theory of the family gave an impulse to family research. His theory was based on the works of Mombert and Brentano in Germany at the turn of the century. Becher's theory gives an explanation of the fertility decline in developed countries.
