Abstract: | GTE (General Telephone and Electronics Corporation) has been involved in a control experiment on the character of R and D (research and development) for services. In this process the balance of the R and D program within a corporate research laboratory has shifted from products to services. The experience provides some insight into the differences between R and D for products and R and D for services. As technical skills and resources are applied toward the end of the value chain, i.e., to the service sector, generic needs such as the design and building of the physical system or network, operation of the system, and the services "products-of-the-system" form the focus of the R and D program. |
