Abstract: | It is argued that in addition to pursuing the technical-administrative distinction researchers in the area of professionalism and innovation should consider supplementing the traditional structural-functional paradigm with the orienting strategies associated with a radical-structural perspective. After presenting the assumptions about professionals and innovation held by the structural perspective, a radical-structural approach is introduced that focuses on conflict as a central element in the role professionals play in the innovation process. Suggestions for implementing this approach in future research are offered. |
