Abstract:Seignorage is the governments' revenue from the creation of money. Two concepts of seignorage appear in the literature: the opportunity cost and the monetary concept of seignorage. The article investigates both within a budgetary accounting framework. Distribution of monetary seignorage among different actors of the economy is analysed on West-German data. The volume of total seignorage income in main industrial countries is also given.
