Abstract:Simplification of work and separation of planning from implementation which are the premises behind the Taylor system are examined, and the creativity in daily work is investigated. As the background of creative work, Maslow's hierarchy of human needs and Herzberg's theory of motivation are highlighted. The superficial contradiction between standardization and creativity is discussed. Four steps leading to creative work are presented. The role of managers in supporting creative work of employees is emphasized. Several guidelines for managers and supervisors are provided. Arguments are presented that redesign or reform of manufacturing jobs, including job enlargement and job enrichment, are effective for upgrading workers' abilities.
