Abstract:The expansion of Mediterranean tourism has been uncontrolled. Priority is given to short-term projects. Under threat from all kinds of pollution, distressing deterioration of landscape and almost intolerable over-population in the peak season, the Mediterranean beach tourism is beginning to show some signs of decline. One possible solution is to diversify Mediterranean tourism into urban areas. The advent of the Single Market should lead to a rise in intra- European tourism, with a middle-income clientele.
