Abstract:The development of strategic alliances between rival firms during the 1980s is changing traditional notions of competition. From cartels and loose alliances opposed to by the law, to all types of inter-company agreements and major international programs like Ariane and Airbus, this term covers a wide range of situations. Based on a study of the aerospatial and armaments industries, leaders in the area, a hypothesis is developed on the conditions required for success or failure of such alliances. Their strategic implications for the firms involved and the sectors of activity in which they operate are also considered.
