Abstract:The audio in the UK is considered including hi-fi, portable audio and compact disc /CD/ but excluding digital audio tape /DAT/. The 1989 audio hardware market was worth some GBP 1.1 billion in 1989, a growth in market value by 8.5 percent over 1988, but only 0.6 percent in constant terms. Volume increased by 6.7 percent to 14.3 million units. A major aspect of demand for audio separates is the increasing unit price of CD decks; however, CD players have on average still decreased 23 percent in price since 1986. Both full size and midi CD separates remain particularly popular, music centres with integral CD are becoming even more attractive to consumers. The latter had the largest value share of market in 1989 /42 percent of sales/.
