Abstract:In 1984, Gulf Oil merged with Chevron to produce the largest integrated oil company in the world. The move created the perfect opportunity to rethink the corporate human resources management system (HRMS) from the ground up. Despite its name, HRMS often tells little about human resources. Payroll and benefits are mostly covered. Therefore, Chevron found it had to develop a new, integrated HRMS. Now it is called EPIC (emphasizing people in Chevron). EPIC had to support Chevron's corporate strategy, which gives managers responsibility for their business. The technical team found that building it from acquired software packages that integrated well would be quick and cost-effective. Ongoing training helps to ensure acceptance.
