Abstract:The UK market for video media - pre-recorded, blank video cassettes and rental - is overviewed. In 1990, total spending on video software purchase and rental topped GBP 1 billion. Pre-recorded videos were a boom area in 1990 /36 percent, compared to 11 percent of the market in 1986/, but the market is immature and liable to rapid saturation. Growth has been stimulated by falling prices. Blank video cassettes continued to decline in value as prices fell further, despite a moderate rise in unit sales. Some value growth is expected in line with a move to higher quality tapes for camcorders and S-VHS systems. The video rental market is entering a phase of intense competition. Data on supply, market sectors, consumer profile, brands, etc. are presented.
