Abstract:The UK market for mobile phones is overviewed. It took off in 1985 with the launch of two cellular networks. Since then the number of subscribers has been growing rapidly. The market is entering a new phase of development in the 1990s with the introduction of a new pan-European operating system called GSM and a number of other complementary and competitive personal communications systems being introduced. The total market, including both equipment sales and rental, was worth GBP 1.2 billion in 1990, up from GBP 200 million in 1986. There are now 1.1 million subscribers to the two main mobile phone networks in the UK. Handportable units are increasing their share, and will account for 60-70 percent of the market in 1991. Prices have fallen rapidly.
