| Abstract: | The paper starts with technological change, enhanced international competition and a world-wide shipping depression during the eighties, which posed new challenges for the Australian and US maritime industries. In Australia a maritime workplace reform was carried out with a focus on government-sponsored corporatism and consensus, while in the US the reform concentrated on deregulation and collective bargaining. |
