Abstract: | A study of the link between technology and international trade shows that complementarity between sectors seems to play a more important role in long-term international competitiveness than specialized concentration in high-technology. Connections between medium-level and high-level technology sectors (for example in Germany and Japan) or between low-level and medium-level technology sectors (for example in Italy) lead to trade surpluses. Interesting enough, that the industrial competitiveness of countries which have specialized in ultra-high technology (the United States, the United Kingdom and France) has declined. |
