Abstract:The implications of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) for working conditions depends crucially on the way in which the component technologies and system architectures are designed and developed to fit preconceived models of operator requirements, work organization and organizational objectives. A recent ILO study and a shorter article are used as a basis for discussing the success of recent attempts to promote skill-based, human-centred approaches to CIM design as an effective way of introducing human working conditions criteria into the design and development of technology.
