Abstract:A case study illustrates how vital it is to plan and manage a restructuring effort both before and after it occurs in order to reap the greatest long-term benefits. In 1989, the Salt River Project (SRP), a Phoenix-based utility, made significant changes in its organizational structure. The company started the process of revising its corporate culture to reflect changes in the business and marketing environment. The process has been painful and difficult. But it has had its rewards: SRP has been able to save money for its customers, and positioned itself to compete in a far more complex and challenging business environment.
