Abstract:Dominion-Swann Industries (DS) is a large diversified company, primarily engaged in the manufacturing of electrical components of automobiles. Since 1970 DS has instituted changes in its work environment. This became necessary because of a number of reasons (productivity dropped, quality was unsatisfactory, employees were demoralized etc.). With the help of a consulting company specialized in employee-relations management a radical work-environment restructuring program was developed and implemented. Four principles of a democratic, anti-hierarchical work-support technology are outlined: entry-level screening of potential employees; improved quality of life; work monitoring; employee communication.
