Abstract:Two firms, the American SmithKline Corporation and the British Beacham have merged. The merger comes against a background of consolidation within the pharmaceutical industry. With the upward pressure on costs, there is a downward pressure on drug prices. The third factor is the increase in generic drug manufacturers. In SmithKline a radical restructuring programme was initiated involving a write-down of assets, the closure of a plant and staff reductions. The product portfolios and research pipelines of the two companies fit together very well. Consumer products side gives the company a better chance for consistent profit flow.
