Abstract:During the past decade a number of major US corporations have been taken over by outside corporations or financial groups. Those mergers and acquisitions which were initiated to implement a strategic growth plan tend to encourage relevant research activity. However, consolidation of overlapping R+D activities can reduce total activity of the merged companies. In a study publicly available documents as well as interviews were investigated. Three conditions of restructuring were identified. Nine case descriptions were analyzed. The impact of restructuring on US industrial research is discussed on two levels: the national technical base and the industry sector.
