Abstract:This special issue is devoted to a topic, "Risk, Managers, and Options in Organizations," that is of central importance to the crossroads of strategy, organization theory, and decision making. The occasion for these papers stems from a conference to honor the contributions of Edward (Ned) Bowman, the Reginald H. Jones Professor of Management and Strategy at the Wharton School who had interest in this area throughout his life time. Ned represented the generation of scholars who were trained in the new disciplines of operations research and management science. Following the Ford Foundation report on the low standards of American business education, this generation was to introduce scientific methods to the discipline of management and organization theory.
