Abstract:The corporation of DaimlerChrysler has asserted itself as an industry leader in the development of fuel cell vehicles. In 1999, it has announced e.g. its latest prototype of New Electric Car (NECAR). However, obstacles remain to the commercial viability of fuel cell vehicles. Costs remain a significant factor, production costs needing to get reduced by a factor of 10. Also, there is the lack of an existing infrastructure to supply hydrogen for refueling. To address the remaining concerns, there is the California Fuel Cell Partnership, a public/private partnership created to demonstrate the viability of fuel cell cars, to advance automobile technology towards its goal of affordability, practicality, and environmental conscientiousness.
