Abstract: | Research of organizational communication has concentrated on downward communication, and to some extent on upward and 360 degree appraisal systems. However, the informal upward communication of critical opinions to managers has been largely neglected. There are important sensemaking heuristics that stimulate managers to disregard information, and other staff to suppress its transmission in the first place, which might lead to managers being over committed to certain courses of action. This paper argues that the elimination of critical upward communication (CUC) leads to organizational problems derived from the earlier described treatment regime, rather than from a pre-existing condition. |
