Abstract:The Cal Ripken of corporate consistency stumbled last year - but don't think #M is in trouble. The company's travails are the result of the very things that make it successful. Whoever it is that puts a silver lining in every cloud is the same character who drops rain on every parade. Lately he has been busy up in Minnesota. In mid-November, the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co., a paragon of corporate consistency, announced the biggest restructuring in its 93-year history. In the fourth quarter of 1995, 3M took a $600 million charge against earnings, equivalent to 27% of 1994 operating income.
